I am a huge Jason Reynolds fan. He's the co-author of "All American Boys," which our English 9 classes read. Last year I took a small class of freshmen to hear him speak at the downtown public library. His message is important, and he's funny and easy to listen to. Today's poem is one he wrote as part of an annual poetry month challenge. You can read more of his poetry here.
(RE)EDUCATION
by Jason Reynolds
If I told you
to zip your lips
and throw away the key
without question or doubt
you’d be silent
But if I told you
to close your eyes
and fly
you’d raise your hand
and ask me how
as if mouths actually have zippers
as if zippers actually have locks
Read, listen, share, create, and be on watch.
