Alexi Pappas is a Jill of many trades--distance runner, screenwriter, filmmaker, actress, poet--and I'm fortunate enough to hear her speak later today. Having used her writing in the creative writing classes I teach, and having followed her running career, I'm so geeked out. Today is a perfect day to showcase some of her poetry.
Scary Things
by Alexi Pappas
The thing about scary things
like spiders
is that they do not scare me
nearly as much
as the things I want the most.
The want things creep and stay
live in my mind–
a much harder place to reach and find
cannot be killed
will grow instead
unlike the spider in my bed
the scary want inside my head
is not afraid
and will not flee
rather than boo
says come and get me.

The Sprint
by Alexi Pappas
When I sprint
my insides
are not all there
they are instead gasping
screeching flapping
baby bird beaks
who beg cry
declare
brave and scared
I seek worms in the form of air
Read, listen, share, create, and be on watch.
